heal, support, comfort, mend
The Recovery Balm has become a cult favorite in the Laurel Skin line, one that has earned its rightful place in any medicine cabinet. It can be used as a helpful remedy for practically any skin ailment from extreme dryness, eczema, perioral dermatitis, painful cystic acne, sensitive allergy-prone skin to the occasional cut, scrape, bug bite, or rash. This multi-functional balm reduces the appearance of redness, swelling, and irritation while offering up a therapeutic dose of whole plant goodness to jump-start and support the skin’s own healing process. In addition to being a family and household staple, this Balm is also a beloved facial moisturizer for inflamed, reactive skin or for those with considerable health concerns or sensitivities.
Tamanu Oil is the foundation and star of this formula. This vibrant green oil is what gives our Recovery Balm its color, along with its ability to correct microbial imbalances, reduce inflammation and create an overall environment for healing. Like most of our Laurel Skin formulas, this Balm contains a 3-month whole plant infusion. Calendula, Comfrey and Yarroware all skin-healing herbs that support new cell growth and regeneration. The microdosed essential oils in Recovery Balm are Lavender, Helichrysum and Lemon Balm; each with a unique relationship to microbiome and skin, included to balance and repair.

While Recovery Balm has been an ongoing recommendation by dermatologists for perioral dermatitis, and we have obtained written testimonials from customers using it for eczema, shingles and general inflammation, we cannot guarantee those same results for every individual, nor can we advise on matters of health.
Ingredients
Helichrysum – This little yellow flower is as gentle as it is potent, reducing redness, swelling and irritation. It strengthens tissues and supports healing activity, minimizing the appearance of scars and broken capillaries.
Tamanu – There is no replacement for our cool green Tamanu oil, which is a sacred plant medicine that thrives in multiple regions near the equator. It is anti-inflammatory, wound healing, antibacterial, and antifungal. The unique phytonutrient profile of this oil stimulates skin immunity and supports the skin’s healing process. Our Tamanu Oil is pressed fresh for Laurel Skin, and we work closely with Indigenous peoples on a small island off the coast of Australia in mutual exchange.
Pomegranate – One of the most beautiful oils that we work with, Pomegranate Seed Oil is rich and moisturizing. It is healing and balancing to skin barriers that have been damaged over time by inflammation.
Calendula – Our vibrant biodynamic Calendula is farmed and harvested just a few miles from our Laurel Skin apothecary-lab. Calendula is deeply restorative and healing to the skin, helpful for scarring and all forms of skin damage.
Lavender – Our custom-distilled, California-grown, biodynamic Lavender essential oil is anti-inflammatory, calming, and cooling to the skin. It soothes the nervous system, which is often compromised alongside inflammatory skin conditions. Lavender promotes a healthy microbiome and prevents pathogenic bacteria from overpopulating the skin.
Lemon Balm – This nutrient-rich green leaf, also known as Melissa, is high in delicate antioxidants that work to reduce free radical damage. It unburdens the skin and has an affinity to both the lymph and immune system, helping to regulate and balance both. Lemon Balm is considered to be a powerful antiviral. This plant contains Rosmarinic Acid which can have a positive effect on lymphedema.

Usage
Apply a very small amount (about 1/4 of a pea size) to face, neck, and chest after applying Elixir and Serum. This product can also be used on the body as often as needed. If using as a body moisturizer or body healing treatment, this can be aided with the use of a Hydrosol.
Use within 6 months of opening and by the recommended use-by date, which is found on the bottom of the bottle. Store this product in a cool, dry and dark place.
If your Balm melts in transit, it could have textural changes that make it less smooth. While this does not affect product performance, a smooth Balm texture is often more desirable. Do not leave your Balm in a hot location like your car or near a sunny window.
Laurel says
Step 1: Overcome Inflammation
The skin cannot function in a healthy way when it is chronically inflamed. Inflammation exists in the body to jump-start the healing process. However, due to diet, stress, and lifestyle, many of us are chronically inflamed. This means that we live in a state of constant inflammation, which then delays the healing process as opposed to playing that valuable role of starting it. Plants work on reducing inflammation in several ways such as providing nourishment, breaking the free radical cycle with antioxidants, and by limiting certain inflammatory biochemical pathways. When inflammation is reduced, the healing process is easier on a cellular and tissue level – thus allowing many secondary symptoms (like acne or hyperpigmentation) to fall away.
Should We Have Named It “The Everything Balm”?
In my own home, the Recovery Balm gets used for everything and everyone. This product is safe for all ages – and pets too. I use it as my moisturizer in extreme weather conditions, like my dry hands and face when I’m in the desert. It is my husband’s go-to for irritation after shaving. We both use it as a foot treatment after long days of hiking. It is used on every rash, bug bite and sunburn. There are so many different self-care rituals in which the Recovery Balm works its way into my own life, it is hard to choose just one example to share with you.
I highly recommend it for travel of any kind, and that is one of my favorite uses for this Balm. Flying has always been hard on my body, mind and skin, which makes traveling with an arsenal of plant allies essential. I take a travel-sized Elixir with me to fully saturate my skin with hydration, and then I apply a layer of Recovery Balm to seal it in to avoid dehydration during the flight. Its anti-inflammatory actions, layer of defense and protection, as well as soothing scents keep my skin and my mind at ease during travel.
